Brooklyn Bridge
I have lived in New York City for jusssst under one year (yes, I know I’m a newbie). I live in Manhattan, work in Manhattan, shop in Manhattan, go out in Manhattan. I basically never leave Manhattan. In the past year, I have been to Brooklyn a total of 2 times, the first being for work. Well last Sunday, I became a tourist in my own city and decided to walk the Brooklyn Bridge. I have always wanted to, but had never really gotten around to it. Since my friend Kelsey was in town visiting, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to check it out. All bundled up in our coats (it was snowing that morning), we made our way downtown...walking fast, faces pass, and I’m home bound (sorry, had to do it).
We got to the edge of the bridge and started following the masses of people toward the other side. When I say “masses of people,” I really mean MASSES. There were SO many people on the bridge...and it was a Monday. I thought for sure there would be less people on the bridge in the middle of the day on a Monday, but I guess not. It doesn’t really seem like a big deal for there to be a bunch of people, but when you take into account that the walking lane is only about 5 feet wide, it makes for a pretty annoying situation. There are two lanes on the bridge, one for walking and one for bikers. Each lane is only about 5 feet wide, and each is intended for movement in both directions. I must say, I came pretty close to losing my life a couple of times. The bikers on the Brooklyn Bridge are out of their freaking minds! I actually don’t understand why anyone would ever want to bike or run across that bridge. There are far too many people on it, especially if a Monday afternoon is any indication of what a busy time would be like. It also doesn’t help that most people walk so so slow. If you’re impatient, like me, it gets pretty irritating after a while.
Kelsey and I did what any seasoned tourist would do, and stopped every 10 feet for pictures. The snow was starting to melt, and the sun was coming out. It ended up being the perfect weather, even for pictures. Of course, it wouldn’t be a normal day in the life of Zoey Leigh if I didn’t have to pee at the most inconvenient time EVER. FYI, there definitely is NOT a bathroom on the Brooklyn Bridge, but that would be a nice idea. Fun fact: on average (meaning sometimes it’s more), I pee about 14 times a day. That’s about twice the number of times that most people have to pee. So, as we neared the Brooklyn end of the Brooklyn Bridge, we began a forced march to the nearest Starbs (Starbucks). Thankfully, Kels had the Starbucks app on her phone, and could easily find the closest one. But of course, once we got there, there was a stupid line. Anyway, this isn’t a story about my frequent urinations, so let me get back on track.
After making our quick pit stop, Kelsey and I wandered into Brooklyn Bridge Park where we took pictures yet again. We spun around in the grass and felt the (slightly less polluted) air as it breezed through our hair and in between our fingertips. Manhattan really is a beautiful city when you step back and get a good look of it. After taking a few minutes to enjoy the sun and the calmness of Brooklyn, we headed back toward the bridge, and practically sprinted our way back to the other side. We had places to go and people to see (mainly just places to go). Maybe we didn’t spend much time on the other side, but at least now I can say that I have been to Brooklyn twice in the last year. One of these days, I’ll go back.
Happy Friday my loves! As Rihanna would say, “cheers to the freakin’ weekend!”
